Google Officially Announces Android Lollipop, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player

Google just made the big announcement... Android 5.0 will be Lollipop and Google will have three new Nexus devices in the Nexus family. The first is the Nexus 6 smartphone which is made by Motorola. The second is the Nexus 9 tablet which is made by HTC, and the third is something called the Nexus Player, which is a brand new media-player/TV device.

The excitement here at HQ is palpable, and we can't wait to dive right into these products. We are going to do a separate story for each one, so stand by for those. Before that we do want to share some important details regarding release dates and carriers. The biggest surprise is that Verizon will actually be getting the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9! Here's a quote from Google's blog with those details,

"Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will be available for pre-order on October 17 and in stores starting November 3. Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order in late October and in stores in Novemberówith options for an unlocked version though Play store, or a monthly contract or installment plan through carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon. Specific carrier rollout will be subject to certification completion and will vary. Check out google.com/nexus for more details on availability.

Android 5.0 Lollipop, which comes on Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, will also be available on Nexus 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks."

Here's a series of links to our series of articles on each specific new Google product:

OK so I have a really old Nokia candy bar phone. I was thinking about finally getting a new phone, a Nexus 6 - the $649 price is for an unlocked phone right, with no contract? I'd imagine one could be had for much less with a 2 year contract couldn't it??
