Post Wal-Mart Family Mobile (T-Mobile) service on Nexus 4

I have an old Nexus One phone that works on Walmarts' Family Mobile service by T-Mobile.
(tampa area, for $54/mo total, unlimited everything).

My plan is to cut my regular size sim card down to the micro sim size and see if I can continue my no contract service on the new Nexus 4.

I'll let you know how it goes.

What's the game plan if cutting the SIM card doesn't work? Then you have no SIM card and no functional phone.

Have you checked out what's currently available for prepaid plans? You might be able to do better switching. (Or at least stay the same if you brick your sim card.)

I did a stupid amount of research before picking my plan so I'm pretty up to date on what's out there. Solavei (T-Mobile MVNO) is $49 for unlimited talk/text/data (unthrottled for 4GB). My post taxes/fees price is $54 and change. They are doing referral sign ups so you can effectively lower this rate if you're interested in such things.

There are also other sub $50 plans out their if you don't need the minutes, or don't need high speed data. (I wanted it all which is why I ended up with Solavei.)

You might not need to hold onto your old plan.

Well if worked like a charm.

I used a sim cutter I purchased from Amazon (lots to choose from) and punched a micro sim out of the older regular sized sim card.
Inserted it in the side tray (metal side down) of the Nexus 4 and then called the tech support line for Family Mobile to tell them I had a new phone.

I gave them the new IMEI # of the Nexus 4 phone...
and in less time than I spent on hold waiting to get through..
The Nexus 4 was up and running.. with the same service I had before (the only service plan Walmart offers).

As far as going back to the old Nexus One phone. That would not have worked out so well.
The cutter I bought had provided these regular sim sized plastic templates that were designed to hold the stamped out micro sim.
They didn't work because they added significant thickness to the micro sim and it would no longer slip into the old phone's sim slot (under the cover)

It does seem however that the micro sim could be placed back into the stamped out shell of the large regular sim and inserted back into the old phone.
    I didn't try it.

As if turns out if you mess up youy Wal-Mart provided sim they will give you another one for free.
Or at least they did for me a year prior.
Then you call tech support to register that new IMEI #.

    Which SIM cutter

I also have the Walmart family plan and have a Nexus 4 on order. I'm interssted to know which SIM cutter you used. I see several on amazon, with varying reviews.

Also, did you have to sand or make any additoinal modificatoin to theSIM after you cut it?

    Thanks!

I don't have Walmart cell service where I live, so I am just curious, couldn't you just go there a get a microsim card and transfer your account. I use Telus prepaid in Canada, just went to the telus store got a micro sim and had them put my existing number and current balance on that. It did cost me 10 bucks for the card.
As I live in a small town, and the Telus store is 2 hours away, I did initially chop my existing sim down using a template from the interweb and some scissors, ( I was too excited to wait for the trip 2 days later), it worked, but I went jogging and the sim card moved just a smidge and I lost service. Had to take it out and re insert then reboot the phone.
