Can I attach an external camera

I love my Assus Nexus 7 and the fact that it didn't have a rear facing camera was not a deal breaker. However one would be nice so my question is can you attach a camera eg webcam etc via the mini usb. Not a techie I'm still trying to recover from the introduction of remote controls so this may be a stupid query. Thanks anyway.

I think this will have little relevance to what you want.
It depends on your camera! Chainfire, the "USB expert" who wrote StickMount (enabling external memory stick/cards on the Nexus 7) has an app on the store called DSLR Controller that works with Canon DSLRs and that would be a case of attaching the tablet to a camera ( see photos here [Android 2.3.1/3.x/4.x][27.09.2012] DSLR Controller v0.96.0 BETA [USB HOST REQUIRED] - Page 201 - xda-developers). The app only works with Canon cameras using DryOS but recent Canon compact cameras use DryOS see list here DRYOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It may be that they haven't been tested

With enough duct tape, any camera would attach nicely. Couldn't speak towards the functionality of it though. :-( Seriously though, I don't think it would be as simple as you're hoping. Surely someone smarter than me will chime in and explain how I'm wrong. (don't call me Shirley)

Seriously looking forward to the upcoming Nexus lineup, even looking forward to some good rumors!

Device History : OG Droid(rooted, liquid smooth rom), Droid RAZR(rooted, stock rom) , Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus (rooted) (not very interesting, I know)

Helicon is also pretty good. It supports raw for an extra 30 dollars or so. They both are pretty good at remote controlling a nikon digi cam. They also support canon.

Not a total fix but you can still screenshot this way.

I use ip cam viewer pro on my nexus then on my phone i use ip webcam. I can then see anything my phones 8mp cam does and take a screenshot thats actually pretty good.
