Can the USB port support a headset?

If I attach an USB A Female to Micro B Male cable to my Nexus 7 OTG port will I be able to use an USB headset with audio apps like Skype?

The headset is a Plantronics Audio 648 USB.

    TIA,
    Neil Darlow

I have no idea. But if you try it I would love to know if it works. Post back and lets us know.

I purchased a suitable USB OTG cable on eBay and have mixed results.

Running USB Audio Tester shows that the cable powers the headset and the device manufacturer and model are reported correctly.

It appears that the stock KitKat kernel does not support USB audio. Not wanting to root my device, I Googled for a solution and it is hopeful that Android L will have the required support.

I will wait for this version of Android in the hope it will deliver on its promise.

    Regards,

I seem to remember reading, that in order to make the Nexus work with a USB headset, you need a self powered headset or a OTG cable with external power.

I don't believe that is correct. With a standard OTG cable I was able to perform the:
    1) Headset microphone to tablet speaker
    2) Tablet microphone to headset speaker
    tests with USB Audio Tester.

All that is needed is USB audio support to be included in the kernel.

    Probably correct.
IDK if/when Google will decide to include it, though.
You may want to search out if any custom kernels are available which will, but will require rooting and, likely, a custom recovery and ROM.
