Can't set up an email account

I am a new owner of a Nexus 7 and quickly discovered that Google doesn't believe in instructions. I can do the simple things and follow the obvious steps but when I got to the last screen (Incoming service settings) and taped the Finish key the response was "Couldn't open connection to server". I used the same account name as I have on my desktop. I bought the Google Nexus 7 Tablet by Chris Fehily and Nexus 7 for Dummies and followed their instructions with no luck. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong.

Are you connected to WiFi when trying to set up your email?

I agree with Mujibar, you might need to check if you have a good wifi connection.

Thank you for your response. I have been out of state and away from my PC so I couldn't continue with my help request.
I have been connected to WiFi, have sent messages by my gmail account to my desktop email account, have browsed a lot and checked my spelling and case repeatedly with the same results. Just to make sure I'm on the right track-I am trying to set up an email account on my Nexus 7 that will allow me to access email addressed to my desktop account which I have with Mindspring. Assuming I'm OK for this, I tap N7 email icon which brings up Account Setup. I enter myaccountname@mindspring.com the password I use when accessing from my desktop. Next I bring up Account Page and select IMAP since my desktop gets mail that way. The Incoming Server Settings page fills in imap.mindspring.com, security type NONE and Port 143. The IMAP path prefix is Optional. When I tap NEXT it Checks Incoming Server Settings and indicates - Couldn't open connection to server.
I tried POP3 and it added a page for the SMTP server settings (password) but the next page ended up with the same error message. If you have no other ideas do you know where else I might look for help.

On your pc settings, do you have a user name and password? if so then you need to put yes to security settings on the nexus and input your user name and password, other than that I agree with above advice

    Cazza,
The user name and password that were entered on the Account Setup page are automatically filled in when the Incoming Server Settings page is displayed. The Security type line shows None but when tapped shows a list of other possibilities-
SSL/TLS, SSL/TLS(Accept all certificates), STARTTLS, or STARTTLS(Accept all certificates). I tried the first 2 but got the same error message as before- Couldn't open connection to server. When I tried the last 2 I got the message - TLS required but not supported by server.
The Port line has 143 displayed with no options allowed when I used None or STARTTLS or STARTTLS(Accept all certificates), and displayed Port 993 when I used SSL/TLS or SSL/TLS(Accept all certificates).
Thank you for your suggestion but I'm still not successfull.

Thank you narffran. It worked right away when I changed the incoming server address from mindspring to earthlink.
