I guess you can try the Settings > Apps > All, look for Google Services Framework, and delete it's data (I'd probably delete it's cache as well). Reboot and see how it goes. The next steps if that doesn't work, would probably be to do another Factory Reset or Flashing a factory image. Both options will kill your data, just to be aware of that.To answer your question, no I don't think we have CEX shops here.

I thought I'd chime in too. If you are reluctant to flash factory images there is another option, you can use Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit. It's not just for root, you an flash factory images, unlock, relock and many other options. It's very safe and has been around since 2012.

OK. And by the way. Many grateful thanks to everyone offering help and assistance. This is all quite a lot, for a 72 year old to take in.

I'll have a go at some of the suggestions when i'm more familiar with the beastie.

Never too late to learn, I'll be 71 in around 50 days but I've been doing this since 2009.

I can beat that! First computer I ever built ran on Dos 6 and Windows 3.1 (sorry for going slightly off topic)

Not to be out done, my first was a dos machine, no windows - only typed commands with two 5 1/4 floppies and no hard drive.

Mine had a massive 150MB hard drive!

Rather different from the 2TB that my current PC boasts!

Well! My "ancient" Nexus must be in a good mood!
Probably, due to excessive tinkering last night. When I turned it on this morning, I found that I had somehow lost the on screen keyboard.
So. Ignoring all the warnings about losing all of my data, apps etc I did a factory reset. After which it promptly went ahead and reinstalled all of my apps automatically. Not just the utilities, but my personal hobby apps as well.
But then. Since it was on a roll. It finally decided to install Android 4.4.4. Followed 10 minutes later by 5.0.2
