I'm also now keeping apps to an essential minimum. For instance, no Facebook or Google! This appears to be helping with battery life. I run those features on both my desktop and laptop anyway.

Facebook / FB Messenger are great apps to kill performance on a Nexus 7(12). Sounds like you're on the right track...

This is slowly becoming apparent! Strangely, I find that any apps with 'Google' in the name, tend to freeze and lock up if I try to use them. Streetview and Maps I found particularly irritating with all the Pop ups and local recommendations!

Good luck, there's a reason those early Nexus tablets are cheap, old parts....
Mine remains a photo dock, which is a difficult task at times...

    Hi GF!

Efin's right - but the 2012 can be made to run very well. I'm working on a guide for those who want to rescue an old 2012, by applying the Pure Nexus ROM, and some other goodies to turbo it out - but it's not quite ready for prime-time yet.

In the meantime have you seen this thread?

"IF" the units not hampered by overused electronics I agree, but 5+ years is ancient for most electronic devices that have been used, obviously if it's just an old unit off the shelf, that's different, but the chipsets may still have issues with OS's and apps that need different technology.
